So I saw this meme on one of the blogs I read and I felt like answering it. Well, some of it. I edited out the questions that made me bored, which was at least half. You can read it now.
Where do you like to sit at the theater? Front row, back row, or in between?
I like to be centered exactly in the middle of the theatre, even if it means I end up sitting directly behind the only other two people in an otherwise empty theater. I’m an a*shole that way. So if you live in Southern California, close to Mexico, and someone does this to you, be nice because it's probably me. Don't talk to me if I'm not wearing makeup, though. I would be horrified.
Foreign language films – subtitles, dubbed, or not at all?
Dubbed if I really have to work to notice that it was dubbed. Otherwise, I’m all for subtitles. My feeling is that if a foreign film is popular enough to be screened in the U.S. art houses, then it is probably really, really good.
Favorite movie watching snack food?
Milk Duds, but no drink. I don’t want to have to pee three-quarters of the way through the screening. Actually, I don't eat Milk Duds at movies anymore. I don't want Mr. Poppins to see me wait in line to pay four bucks for a dollar box of candy.
What thing will turn you off of a movie almost immediately?
No slapstick comedy or parodies. No horror movies. No movies that are bitterly sad, enraging, or out-and-out depressing. And I’m very particular about my porn.
What movie did you go to see the most times at the theater?
E.T., three times. Of course, two of those times were at a military base movie theater (my uncle was in the Air Force) and therefore cost "almost free."
Movie that you always get sucked into when it comes on TV no matter how many times you’ve seen it?
The Color Purple and A Christmas Story. But mostly A Christmas Story. But I figure a lot of people are hooked on that one because there's one station that shows nothing but that movie, non-stop on the week leading up to Christmas.
Movie you’re almost ashamed to admit you like?
I’m shameless but there are a few that I would be ashamed of if I had that chromosome: Wild Orchid 2 springs to mind. Worse, there are movies I should be ashamed to admit not to like: Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, The English Patient, and anything with Woody Allen.
Biggest tearjerker?
I cried buckets for My Girl. If I had known that was going to happen, I wouldn’t have watched it. No one warned me. I got wise, though, and avoided Pay It Forward like the plague. Who wants to see a movie where a sweet, awkward kid dies trying to do something good?
Scariest movie?
Carrie. I was about nine. I only saw the end when the hand pops out of the ground. Three years later, I had to sidestep my way to the gravesite at my paternal great-grandmother’s funeral. I was so scared, I couldn't even be smooth about it despite the fact that there were at least fifty people at the burial and my dad was actually crying with noise.
Obscure movie you love but which almost nobody else knows of?
If Lucy Fell
What’s the biggest factor in making you decide if you want to pay to see a movie in the theater or wait for the DVD?
Special effects; if a movie doesn’t have them, especially pyrotechnics, I can happily wait for the DVD. I prefer watching movies at home.
What do most of your favorite movies have in common?
They’re a little odd and often independent; frequently complicated. Kinda like me.

Now Polly, was Carrie really scarier than the Candy Man. How did I get you to go see that with me? I have this memory of the guy in the movie looking in the toilet and there was nothing there, but you were screaming.

Or a whole bunch of us seeing Jurassic Park the weekend we graduated high school. You were holding hands with The-Ex-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named and you actually drew blood with your nails.

I'm so sad we don't have Woody Allen to share. His newer films are a little disappointing...perhaps his daughter-wife is having a bad influence.
In Mexico I stumbled upon the 1965 Otto Preminger's Bunny Lake is Missing and THAT was one great film watching moment. Almost as good as when I got sick and stayed in bed watching Who's The Boss while the hubby took the kids to that dreaded water park. I hear Reese Witherspoon is staring in the remake of Bunny Lake is Missing.

Actually, I'm an INTJ so I am fairly unbiased about the man personally, it's his movies that make me bored. Sorry, Liza. I like stuff to blow up.

I love heartfelt movies about the human condition. I like independent films and character development and quiet stories and quirky characters. I'm not a big fan of special effects. And I still hated Annie Hall. For a long time I worried there was something wrong with me. I was so relieved to find out there were others out there who hated Woody Allen films too. I wasn't alone.

I'm with Polly and Bookgirl on this. I hate Woody Allen films. So does Blackstone. I've tried to like his films but they just aren't for me.

Oh, Liza, is there someone else we could love in common? Maybe Bill Murray in Lost in Translation? I really liked that movie and nothing blew up (I don't think anyone even sneezed), which just goes to show you that I make no sense.

Poppins - I LOVE Lost In Translation. I watched it every Sunday evening for probably 4 months straight.
Did you like Punch Drunk Love?
Posted by: Liz | August 20, 2007 at 06:18 AM
Loved Lost in Translation. But Diosa and I actually walked out of the theater during Punch Drunk Love. We had already wasted 45 minutes of our lives on it and were unwilling to throw more good time after bad.

Didn't like Punch Drunk Love, and didn't finish it either. The sisters were too mean.
